Common Magnesium Supplement Types
Magnesium oxide is the LEAST well-absorbed magnesium on earth. This form of magnesium often absorbs at 4% or less, often requiring people to take more to feel a difference. This type of magnesium is most often offered in a pill or capsule form, and is available without a prescription. Magnesium citrate is the most commonly used form of magnesium, available in powder form to mix into a solution and take orally. Magnesium threonate, or L-throeonate, is another chelated form of magnesium that is synthetically manufactured by combining magnesium with threonic acid. Animal studies have alluded to the effectiveness of increasing magnesium levels for brain health although all magnesium supplementation have been proven to affect and support brain health.
