Comparing Different Forms Of Magnesium

It's easy to become confused when you first start looking for a magnesium supplement, trying to understand why there are so many different forms of magnesium available. How do you select a magnesium supplement based on the type of magnesium it features as an ingredient?

Comparing Traditional Supplements

Determine If Your Supplement Is Enough

People that have taken magnesium supplements in the past may have experienced only their worst parts, like digestive distress, or their current supplement may never make it where it is needed because of low absorbability. Take our short, online magnesium deficiency test and find out if you're experiencing magnesium deficiency today.

Common Magnesium Supplement Types

Magnesium Oxide

Magnesium oxide is the LEAST well-absorbed magnesium on earth. This form of magnesium often absorbs at 4% or less, often requiring people to take more to feel a difference. This type of magnesium is most often offered in a pill or capsule form, and is available without a prescription. Based on the your own body's requirements, level of discomfort experienced, and how well the magnesium is actually absorbed, it may require additional doses per day to achieve your daily nutrient goals.

Magnesium Citrate

Magnesium citrate is the most commonly used form of magnesium, available in powder form to mix into a solution and take orally. This liquid form is more absorbable than magnesium oxide at ~20%, but can quickly become inconvenient because of the messes created when mixing each dose. This form of magnesium is commonly used to increase bowel movements, and should not be used long-term for nutritional purposes.

Magnesium Glycinate

Magnesium chelates, like magnesium glycinate and magnesium gluconate, are magnesium compounds attached to amino acids to help promote better absorption. At 20% absorption, these lab-engineered formulations offer higher absorption rates than magnesium oxide, but require a chemical-binding with a carrier to facilitate it, diminishing its purity.

Magnesium L-Threonate

Magnesium threonate, or L-throeonate, is another chelated form of magnesium that is synthetically manufactured by combining magnesium with threonic acid. Animal studies have alluded to the effectiveness of increasing magnesium levels for brain health although all magnesium supplementation have been proven to affect and support brain health.

Why Magnesium Chloride Is Superior

Purity and Absorbability

Magnesium chloride represents the purest form of magnesium, being the precursor to metallic magnesium. This form of magnesium is trusted in healthcare, pharmaceutical, and nutraceutical applications as well as the consumer market. Magnesium chloride is represented as a cation, or magnesium ion, where the mineral is considered to be oxidized. These ions bind with proteins and nucleic acids to support energy production and is required in over 300 enzymatic processes in the body. While all forms of magnesium create a laxative effect, these smaller ions are absorbed higher in the GI tract, leading to less stomach discomfort.

Learn More About ReMag®:  ReMag liquid magnesium is formulated from a pure source of magnesium chloride and developed using a proprietary, picometer process for absorbability.
